Homeowners are less dependent on the experts for these jobs as the market is flooded with products that are easy to use, irrespective of the skill set they possess. A common task which has gained immense popularity among DIY enthusiasts is floor installation. Proper floor installation is vital to enhance the aesthetics and render a completely new look to the abode.

Laminate flooring is generally chosen by DIYers as it is quite simple to install. Most importantly, it does not require removal of the old flooring, which is quite time-consuming. Laminate flooring is popularly known as floating floor as it floats above the floor and is not permanently attached to it. These are available in a wide range of choices that suit the budget and preference of almost every homeowner. Besides, laminate flooring can be engineered to resemble wood or stone flooring that are quite time-consuming to install as well as expensive in comparison to the floating flooring.

Another flooring option that homeowners often choose for their homes while doing the installation themselves is the engineered wood flooring. These come as tongue and groove installation system that is extremely easy to install and does not demand any expert guidance. Homeowners have to install this flooring over an underlayment that is mostly rubber-foam. This type of hardwood flooring is considered durable and comprises three layers. The wooden cross-band is sandwiched between the veneer bottom layer and pre-finished hardwood exterior layer.

Cork flooring has also gained immense importance as a preferred DIY flooring option as it is not only easy to install but offers various advantages as well. It is soft, long-lasting and natural insulator, along with being resistant to irritants like mold and mildew. Besides, homeowners can render a unique look to their flooring with the help of numerous stains and finishes. Many homeowners think twice before using this flooring option as it is one of the most expensive flooring options. However, it is one of the flooring options that actually add value to the house and is thus considered as a profitable investment.
With the coming of vinyl flooring in the floating floor format, vinyl sheet flooring has become one of the preferred choices of DIYers. Homeowners just have to lay the dimensionally correct sheets and install shoe molding at the meeting point of the wall and sheets. This is so simple that every homeowner can install vinyl flooring over the old flooring without any hassle.

Thus, homeowners who wish to change the look of their house, but do not want to spend money on seeking professional help can do this easily by installing floor on their own.

Warm Home in Cold Winters with SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating
Solar heating technology has come a long way, with energy being tapped and utilized more effectively. There are innumerable uses of solar energy in households and commercial set-ups, which is conventionally converted to thermal energy and used for heating water, heating home or pool. However, solar heating activities depend on the amount of solar radiation received by the surface area and surface reflectance. Moreover, other factors such as surface emissivity, ambient temperature and thermal convection from wind also play significant part in solar heating.
SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating option is an excellent solution, worth consideration while planning for cold winter months. The method has several advantages, most notable being energy saver, reduced utility costs and clean energy. A radiant floor heating system is viable with solar energy, due to relatively low temperature of hot water that solar systems produce very efficiently. There are several radiant floor heating systems, such as masonry heater and gas boiler, which accept heat energy from sun.

The advanced dual-wire technology of SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating allows homeowners to install mats that end at preferred location. These mats are flexible option for heating, as mat can be positioned in various angles such as 90° and 180°. Entire section is heated thoroughly as wires can be fitted easily at any angle and into curves. However, open weave design of the wire mesh is recommended owing to strong bonding of the thinset to the surface, above as well as beneath the heating mat. For an ideal floor warming application, wire spacing limit is determined to be within 90°.
A heating cable, a foil radiator and a set of power leads for connection to the floor-sensing control are the integral components of the SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating Mats. The heating mats are Aramid reinforced and have ETFE high-temperature insulation along with oxygen-free copper alloys and XLPE (PEX) jacket. These heating mats are appreciated for easy installation, easy connection establishment, convenient management and safe usage.
To ascertain maximum safety, heating element mesh is woven beside the mat in a ring-like shielded jacket. The set-up facilitates power supply to the grounding wire within the junction box for the thermostat. Along with safety and intrinsic attributes, homeowners have appreciated SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating system for its aestheticism.

After continual research and development, solar floor heating systems have become immensely effective and efficient. Over the years, these systems have also provided architectural flexibility to the users and can be installed in any part of the house. Moreover, installation of SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating system reduces amount of air pollution by limiting greenhouse gases that are emitted using alternative fuels such as oil, propane and natural gas for heating. In case the solar system cannot meet heating requirements, back-up systems can be synchronized for heat supply.
For ensuring warm home in cold winters, one can choose SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating. However, planning the layout of the electrical floor heaters, budget and daily or yearly projections are some of the basics that need to be considered by homeowners before availing this solution.

Slate A Great Flooring Option

Slate, Slate sealer, ceramic tiles, hard surface, stone, marble, granite, travertine
Flooring is an integral part of the house, which can significantly affect its appearance. Hence, it is vital to select the right flooring option for your home, which can make it look more attractive and appealing. Among the various flooring options available, more and more people are opting for slate, for residential as well as commercial buildings. Owing to its versatility and aesthetic appeal, it is increasingly being used in interiors as well as exteriors. Not only is it a feasible flooring option, but is also a great option for the walls, ceilings and roofs.
Slate adds elegance and sophistication to an interior, which other flooring options cannot. This sturdy natural-stone flooring option is formed when minute particles of silt and clay bind under high pressure and temperature. Owing to this process, slate gets its monolithic and ultra-fine texture. It is generally gray in color, but can also have shades of blue or green on it. However, it is also available in other colors like purple, brown and white pink, among others. You can make use of slate’s different shades of color for creating unique designs for your flooring. Along with its diversity in colors, slate tiles are also found in varied shapes, thicknesses and finishes. You can combine these variable attributes to your advantage and come up with different flooring ideas for house.
In comparison to various other flooring options, slate is a more durable and long lasting material. Once installed, it can last for many years and you may not have to replace it with any other flooring; thus, proving cost advantage. Additionally, it also has low maintenance requirements, unlike some other flooring options such as hardwood flooring. Slate is also resistant to dirt, and requires regular mopping with mild detergent cleaning.
Slate, Slate sealer, ceramic tiles, hard surface, stone, marble, granite, travertine
The fine molecular structure of slate renders several advantages over other flooring options. Along with being tough, it is also resistant to moisture, which guarantees firm footing and avoids slipping or gliding. Owing to this, slate is a great flooring option for high traffic areas, or areas that are exposed to water, like hallways, porches, kitchen and bathrooms. In addition, this anti-stain flooring option is also bacteria and allergen resistant, thereby reducing the risk of diseases. To top it all, slate is quite affordable as compared to most of the other available flooring options, like marble and granite.
Due to the various advantages offered by it, slate proves to be a great flooring option that can enhance the appearance of any décor. However, an important thing which one should always keep in consideration is that the installation must be done in the right manner. If the installation is not done properly, flooring may be susceptible to breakage.
Since slate is a heavy natural stone, it needs to be installed correctly on a strong, solid subfloor instead of a flexible subfloor. Once properly installed, it will last for several years, without much maintenance requirements. Hence, if you are planning to install new flooring, you should opt for slate, which has become a preferred flooring choice of many people.
To seal use Slate Sealer by Glaze n Seal that offers unsurpassed low gloss protection for slate, quarry, tile, and other dense tile. This easy to apply, fast drying, non-yellowing acrylic provides a barrier against oil, water, based stains, acids, and efflorescence indoors and outdoors. With excellent UV and abrasion resistance.

They have more than one feature which makes them a common man’s game. First, they are light, which means they do not demand a whole team, with you, to bring them from the store. And second, they are easy to install. Neither do they need framing prior to installation nor are they particular to the dryness or wetness of installing area. In addition they are easy to mount and are flexible with respect to being installed prior or after tiling. This means all that you have to do is mount them, place mortar mix (sand & cement), and tile as desired.

Recommended Sealers for Use on Concrete Counters
The following Glaze ‘N Seal sealers are popular choices for use on concrete counters. They will resist water stains, oil stains and enhance appearance. They are durable and re-coatable. Always perform a test patch, allow it to dry thoroughly and “test” likely contaminates.
Wet Look Lacquer
  • A clear coating sealer (solvent base)
  • Non-Yellowing
  • Will not turn white
  • Excellent oil resistance
  • Resists acids
  • Resists efflorescence (white residue)
  • Imparts “wet look” appearance
  • Additional coats add gloss
  • Safe for food surfaces (after fully curing)
  • Re-coatable
  • Leaves a coating on top of surface
Multi-Purpose Sealer
  • A clear coating sealer (water base)
  • Leaves a coating on top of surface
  • Non-Yellowing
  • Resists acids
  • Excellent oil resistance
  • Safe for food surfaces (after fully curing)
  • Re-coatable
  • May be applied over Wet Look Lacquer
  • Medium to high sheen (based on number of coats)
Stone Sealant Impregnator
  • A below surface penetrating sealer (water base)
  • Leaves no film or coating on top
  • Natural look appearance
  • Safe for all food surfaces
  • Excellent oil resistance
  • NOT acid resistant
  • May be re-applied if needed
  • Not recommended over coating-type sealer
New concrete counters should cure at least seven (7) days or more before sealing. Read package label carefully and perform a small test-patch before sealing entire surface. Concrete surface must be clean, dry and free of any contaminants including old wax and failing sealers. Wax or polish should be stripped with a quality item such as Glaze ‘N Seal Stone Stripper or Heavy Duty Cleaner. Old coating-type sealers (if peeling or damaged) should be removed with a quality item such as Glaze ‘N Seal Paint, Sealer and Coating Stripper.
Estimated coverage per gallon for the first coat – 150 to 200 square feet. Additional coats will add fifty-percent more coverage.
Coating-type sealers will build protection and gloss with multiple, thin and even coats. Use a lambs-wool applicator, brush or paint pad. Apply additional coats until the last coat does not darken the appearance.
Penetrating-type sealers will not add gloss but will protect. Apply two liberal coats with a brush or paint pad. Generally, additional coats will not affect appearance, but may leave a residue if over applied.
Routine Maintenance
Even AFTER sealing, the concrete counters are not indestructible.
Use coasters for glasses and hot pads for hot items. Minor scratches should be removed with non-abrasive “Scotch Brite” pad.
Do not place hot pans and dishes (above 300°) on sealed surface.
Stain resistance to water-based spills, oils, food items, etc., is excellent; however, spills should be removed as soon as possible.
Coating-type sealers will be etch-resistant to acidic items such as colas, citrus juices and wine because of the film barrier. Penetrating sealers do not protect against etching.
Clean the sealed surface regularly with a soft cloth using diluted Glaze ‘N Seal Neutral Cleaner or Stone Cleaner. Rinse with a minimum of water and dry promptly. Soaps and detergents can leave a film on the surface. NEVER use abrasive cleaners, bleach or ammonia.
The use of Glaze ‘N Seal’s Acrylic Floor Polish or a quality paste Carnauba food safe wax is optional as a sacrificial maintenance top coat…. Not a silicone type product.
Reapply polish as needed (remove any old polish or wax first) before reapplying sealer.
Note: Always test a small area of surface to be sealed to verify penetration and satisfaction of sealed appearance.

Floating Floor the Preferred Choice

ceramic tiles, Hardwood floor. Laminate flooring, stone, marble, granite, travertine
Flooring can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your house, provided it is appropriately installed. Right installation of the flooring is as important as choosing the right flooring material. Nowadays, people are increasingly opting for floating floor. Floating floor, a misnomer, is actually a floor installation method, which is wrongly confused by many as a type of flooring material. In floating floor, the flooring material generally consists of planks, which are installed without being glued, stapled, or nailed to the subfloor. Instead, of being fastened to the subfloor, the planks are joined to one another; allowing the floor to ‘float’ over the surface underneath.
Homeowners can choose amongst the different types of floating floors; such as the ‘glue together’, which is an older version of floating floor. The glue together floating floor is assembled with the help of appropriate adhesive and pressure applied on the planks, to bind it together. Another version of floating floor is the ‘click together’, which is also referred to as ‘enter click’ or ‘tongue and groove’. In this, the edges of the planks are so designed that these easily click together, when combined and tapped on the edge toward one another. This does not require the use of any adhesive, making installation hassle-free and time-saving. The latest as well as the fastest floating floor option is the ‘lock and fold’ system, which requires neither tapping of the planks nor sticking them with glue. In this type of floating system, the planks are attached with the help of a special milled interlocking system.
ceramic tiles, Hardwood floor. Laminate flooring, stone, marble, granite, travertine
The rising popularity of the floating floor is due to the various benefits it offers. The biggest advantage of choosing floating floor is that it is convenient and hassle-free, which saves both effort and time. This installation method is so easy that the flooring of the room can be completed in just a few hours; irrespective of whether the installer is amateur or experienced. In addition, the floating floor is available in a wide range of material, such as hardwood, linoleum, bamboo, cork and plastic laminate. Depending upon their preferences and budget, homeowners can choose amongst any of the available options.
Floating floor is an ideal choice for areas with high humidity or moisture problem. Most of the flooring options are affected by fluctuations in moisture and humidity. Wooden planks, for example, tend to contract when humidity is low and expand when humidity is high; thereby causing gaps and buckling, respectively. In contrast, since the floating floor is not fastened to the underlying surface, it contracts and expands as one complete unit without giving rise to gaps or buckling. Besides, spacers are left alongside the walls to allow for expansion.
ceramic tiles, Hardwood floor. Laminate flooring, stone, marble, granite, travertine
As floating floor is generally available as planks, homeowners only need to replace the damaged ones, rather than change the whole flooring. As a result, homeowners tend to save significant amount of money. Additionally, it is less expensive than most of the other flooring choices.
Owing to all these benefits, floating floor has become a preferred choice of more and more homeowners.

People pay special attention while getting their bathrooms constructed and make sure that their aesthetic and luxurious appeal is enhanced. On the other hand, when it comes to offices or work places, bathrooms are designed in such a way that they present a contemporary look. The designing, colors, accessories, fittings and themes incorporated in the bathroom depends on the space available and the budget.

The first thing that comes into notice in any bathroom is the cabinet. Any change made in the cabinets transforms the entire interior of the bathroom. For giving an illusion of space in the bathroom, you should go in for subtle colors like beige and mauve. You can also go in for cabinets in themes like rain forest and ocean blue.
Fixtures are the next important things which require a conscious decision before getting a bathroom remodeled. Faucets and sinks should be selected in synchronization with the style of cabinetry and the overall décor of the bathroom. One can go for trendy styles or can stick to the old elegant & sophisticated look.
Hardware that one wants to use inside the bathroom should be cautiously selected as these enhance or deteriorate the overall appeal of the bathroom. Lighting is another focus area that you should pay attention to, as it makes the room look brighter and gives depth to it. You would find a plethora of options in types and shapes of lighting options.

If you have a small bathroom, then you can make it spacious looking by altering the size of the mirror used. Mirror is a major point to concentrate on, while going for remodeling. These days people prefer to have large mirrors in bathrooms, majorly because they make the bathroom look larger.
While going in for remodeling of bathroom, you should also focus on the type of tub or shower to be used. These are available in different shapes, sizes and colors to enhance the overall interiors. Make sure that the bath tub blends with the color of the tiles & flooring, or is in contrast to them. You can also opt for flooring and tiling, which has a similar shower counterpart available. This would add finishing to your bathroom and make it look more elegant.
Keeping in mind these important points, you can completely transform the looks of your bathroom and give it a fresh appeal.

Windows Not Just a Piece of Glass

Windows, Home remodeling, DIY, exterior remodeling, Flooring Supply, do it yourself, home improvement
It’s early in the morning and you’ve just opened the curtains to bring in the bright new day. Or perhaps the snow is falling softly outside as you snuggle up with a cup of hot cocoa at your window seat and take in the view. Windows have been around for hundreds of years, and while their basic purpose has not changed, they have gone from being a necessary “hole in the wall” to a significant element of design.
What is the definition of a Window? According to Webster’s dictionary, a window is an opening, usually framed and spanned with glass, built into a wall for light and air. We still use windows for this fundamental purpose. Properly placed windows can provide cross ventilation and eliminate the need for artificial lighting during the day. Most people have at one time or another been in a dark, dreary room that simply needed the light of a window. Current national code requires that the glazed area of the windows (that is the glass itself) equal 8% or more of the square footage of a room.
Windows can range widely in style and cost. If you prefer contemporary styling, you may choose to go with a casement style window (a unit that either cranks out to the left or to the right). A more traditional style is the double hung unit (a unit that slides up and down). Other styles include horizontal sliders, awnings, and transom windows. A window manufacturer can provide detailed descriptions of the various styles available. The styles are as plentiful as the prices are varied. Of course, you can mix and match units. For example: in your kitchen you may desire a casement unit above the sink because they are easier to open reaching over the counter; however, adjacent to the kitchen, in a gazebo shaped breakfast area, there is no reason you should not consider using double-hung units.
Let’s take a closer look at the two most popular units, the casement and double hung window. There are pro’s and con’s to both. The casement offers full ventilation when opened where the double-hung only gives about half. However, if you have a group of casements units overlooking your deck or patio, be aware that casements take up exterior living space. So be careful at parties; open casements can be very painful when walked into. Probably the best part of double-hung units is many new models tilt in for easier cleaning, where as the casement does not offer a similar feature.
Whether you are building new, adding on additional space, or renovating a room in your home, the windows you choose should play a major role. When looking at windows for your new project, look carefully at the hardware, is it well manufactured? Plastic hardware may provide a more contemporary look, but also tend to break sooner. Open the windows at the showroom, do they operate easily? Do they offer a good warranty on the unit as a whole? Most manufactures should cover the windows for at least ten years. Check the energy efficiency (insulation value) of the particular units you are interested in. I recommend a minimum insulation value of R-3. Most units nowadays carry an insulation value of at least this, and very often it is higher. Overall, examine the quality of the unit on the interior as well as exterior.
You will find that the cost of windows is quite significant, but you get what you pay for. You want your windows to last 30 to 50 years, therefore they need to be constructed from good quality materials and made to last for long time. If you skimp on quality, you may have problems in as little as 5 years. Depending on the number of windows your project calls for, you should plan to spend approximately 5%-10% of your entire building budget if you are adding on or building a new home. This percentage is higher for smaller renovations.
Windows provide much more than light and air today. A properly designed window can make or break the mood of a room. Today’s windows should be treated as an integral part of the design and NOT JUST A PIECE OF GLASS.

Waterproof Flooring Safe and Hassle-free

waterproof flooring, Ceramic tile, waterproofing, anti slip, cork flooring, vinyl, tile
Choosing the right flooring for your home is an important decision which needs to be made wisely. You need to select a practical and affordable flooring option, which suits your requirements as well as budget. Moreover, different areas of the house require different types of flooring. For example, if you are planning to install flooring in your bathroom, patio or by the pool side; then the material chosen must be waterproof.
If the flooring in these parts of your home is not water resistant, it can lead to quite a few problems. One of the biggest concerns is that the floor becomes slippery, which can lead to accidents. It can also result in water logging, seepage, mold growth and other such problems, which can be dangerous and unhygienic, and may also adversely affect the look of the place. In order to avoid such inconveniences, you should consider installing waterproof flooring in areas with high exposure to water or moisture.
There are numerous waterproof flooring options available in the market. Linoleum, which is a ‘green’ flooring option, is quite popular with homeowners for its water resistant properties. This waterproof flooring option is available in a wide range of designs, colors and thicknesses. In addition, this easy to install flooring is also easy to maintain; you only have to wipe it with a damp cloth to remove different kind of stains.

Another waterproof flooring option that more and more homeowners are opting for is tiles. These are available in different sizes, colors, patterns, and designs; which suit diverse requirements of different homeowners. Further, the tiles are available in various kinds, such as porcelain tiles that are appreciated for their precise measurement. You can even choose natural tiles, which add to the aesthetic appeal by rendering a natural look to the room. Another great option is the ceramic tiles, which are available in assortment of colors, designs, and sizes. You can choose different colored tiles to create unique patterns that enhance the look of your home.
Vinyl, another waterproof flooring option, is durable, tough and affordable. The versatile material beautifully imitates the look of various expensive flooring options like wood and ceramic tiles, without having to deal with their drawbacks. Though it is water resistant, some vinyl floors can however become slippery. Hence, make sure that the vinyl you select is slip resistant, along with being water resistant. Furthermore, you have the option to select either single or roll flooring; where the latter proves a better option as it leaves less gaps and seams for water penetration.
waterproof flooring, Ceramic tile, waterproofing, anti slip, cork flooring, vinyl, tile
You can also opt for cork flooring, which is appreciated for its resilience and flexibility. This natural, biodegradable as well as recyclable material is hypoallergenic as well as anti-static. Further, you can also select floating laminate flooring, which is not attached to the underlying surface, rather floats over it; thereby leaving no room for water to seep through.
With so many waterproof flooring options available, it can become daunting for homeowners to select the right one. Hence, while selection keep certain things, like durability, cost, and maintenance into consideration. Choose the flooring that meets your requirements, without making a dent in your pocket.

Candles are great to bring fire’s warmth into a room, as is a fireplace. And a gorgeous fish aquarium or tabletop fountain provides the soothing energy of water. If you live in a wood home, make sure the paint is fresh and un-chipped. Paint the shutters a new color to give your home renewed interest. Flower plantation and tree swings can add a great charm to your garden. Installing a pool or hot tub is also a good idea. Not only will you get the benefits of having your own place to splash around in, your home will be worth more if you ever decide to sell it.
Flooring: The flooring or the baseline of the homes makes a lot of difference. These days you have options to choose from. PEI Scale Ceramic and Porcelain

ceramic bathroom tiles, stainless steel tiles, mosaic tiles, Glass Tile, Metal Tile, Tile Trims, Ceramic tile, Shower Tile, Flooring Tile, Los Angeles Tile, stone, Porcelain, marble, Granite, install tile, Counter top tile, Bathroom Tile
Sometimes it becomes very difficult to choose among the different types of tiles one can use at home, offices and other places. PEI Scale was established with the view to resolve these kinds of confusions and help people make a wise decision. The ratings, undoubtedly, prove beneficial for the consumers to decide as to which type of tile goes well with which kind of floor or wall surface.
Porcelain Enamel Institute, an organization concerned with the betterment of the porcelain industry since 1930, set up the PEI Scale to provide certain common and universally accepted yardsticks. These give appraisal of different types of tiles and their use, thereby, acting as a valuable guide for the consumers. The PEI Ratings are popularly resorted to while deciding upon which variety of tile is best suitable to meet their requirements. It gives a clear picture of the hardness of specific varieties of tiles and help in zeroing down to a particular type. Although ratings are given for both ceramics and porcelain tiles, people tend to focus more on the former at the expense of ignoring the latter which are equally important. However, it is advisable to pay attention to both while determining the right type of tile if one wants to get value for money.
The PEI Scale works by bringing to fore the resistance and endurance level of an enameled surface which gives a fairly clear idea about the kind of foot traffic it can survive as well as how durable it is. Once assigned, these are extremely helpful in taking decisions regarding their suitability in a given context of use. PEI Scale divides the various types of tiles under five different categories which are decided keeping numerous factors in mind.
ceramic bathroom tiles, stainless steel tiles, mosaic tiles, Glass Tile, Metal Tile, Tile Trims, Ceramic tile, Shower Tile, stone, Porcelain, marble, Granite
If on one hand tiles falling under class 0 are deemed unfit for flooring purposes; then on the other hand, there is class 1 that implies that the tiles categorized under them are suitable to be used for commercial and residential walls. Additionally, the tiles under class 1 are shown to be tolerant towards bare foot traffic. Similarly, class 2 can bear the burden of what has been called soft soled traffic and can comfortably be used for bath and wall floor, making them ideal for use in homes.
Class 3 tiles stands out from those mentioned so far as these find favor with both light commercial floors and all types of residential floors. Class 4 tiles are in a different league altogether as these are considered competent for catering to light industrial, institutional, and medium commercial areas. Tiles falling under the class 5 have been declared to be highly durable and resistant to extra heavy traffic. Furthermore, these are also hailed as chemically more resistant and tolerant towards dirt that is inimical to its quality.
Although PEI Scale can prove to be a useful aid in taking the crucial decision regarding the right type of tiles a person should purchase one must not bank on them exclusively. One must take into consideration other important factors like bond strength, glaze, hardness, shape, and dimension and water absorption, while taking a final decision.
Group I: Suitable only for residential bathrooms.
Group II: Suitable for general residential areas, except for kitchens, hallways or other heavy traffic areas.
Group III: Suitable for all residential and light commercial applications like offices and reception areas
Group IV: Suitable for any residential and moderate commercial applications.
Group V: Suitable for all residential and all commercial applications.
CLASS 0: Tiles technically unsuitable for floors.
CLASS 1: Residential and commercial wall and bare foot traffic.
CLASS 2: Wall and residential bath floor, and soft soled traffic.
CLASS 3: All residential floors and light commercial floors.
CLASS 4: Medium commercial, light industrial and institutional, moderate soiling.
CLASS 5: Extra heavy traffic, abrasive dirt, chemically more resistant.

Different Garage Flooring Options

Garage flooring, Garage tile Floor, ceramic Garage tiles, plastic modular, commercial floors
Garage is no longer a place for parking cars, it serves multiple purposes. It can be used as a storage space or even a work area. Depending upon the use of the garage, you can select the right flooring option. There are several garage flooring options available in the market amongst which you can choose as per your preference and budget.
A popular garage flooring option is tiles, plastic modular or ceramic. Ceramic tiles can be a good flooring option for the garage, only if you use the commercial grade thickness tiles. Do not use lower grade tiles as these may not be able to withstand the load of the vehicle. These tiles are available in an assortment of colors which can give a vibrant appearance to your garage. In order to achieve a different look you can use different tile colors and form various decorative patterns. You can also choose amongst different patterns and style to give a different look to it. Ceramic tiles are durable, affordable and easy to install. Other than this, one can even use plastic modular flooring which is inexpensive and available in various colors. These easily snap together with the help of rubber mallet, without any need for gluing or prepping. These are easy to walk on and offer protection from stains, which may be caused due to gas or oil. In case, these tiles do get damaged, you can replace them individually without having to install a whole new flooring.
Garage flooring, Garage tile Floor, ceramic Garage tiles, plastic modular, commercial floors
Garage flooring are usually made of cement. A cemented floor gives a monotonous look, hence in order to make your garage a little more appealing; one can resort to a number of options that can enhance the visual outlook. Painting is one of the most common and simplest garage flooring options, which adds color to the otherwise boring gray floor. It is important to choose the right kind of paint which can withstand the assault from things such as chemicals, heat, and obviously vehicle weight. In addition, it should bond effortlessly with the concrete slabs. It should not peel or scratch under consistent use. Epoxy and latex paints are most commonly used paints, which protect the concrete slab from dirt, oil and grease. These are available in wide range of colors and textures, which blends well with garage wall’s color.
Floor mats are another viable option, especially for homeowners on a tight budget. These are available in different sizes, shapes and material, including laminate, vinyl and rubber. The floor mats are easy to install, highly durable and can withstand everyday wear and tear. In addition, these are resilient, stain resistant and require low maintenance. These mats shield the floor from moisture, dirt and mold build-up. You can yourself install these mats, which fit the exact size of your garage.
Hence, depending upon your budget and use of garage, you can choose amongst these flooring options. Moreover, with the right garage flooring option, you can make your garage, not only functional, but beautiful like any other part of your home.

The Facts about SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating

electric floor heating, radiant heat flooring, radiant floor heating, under floor heating, electrical floor heating, floor heating, SunTouch, warm your floors, sun touch heating system, Heated floor mat, heat mat, radiant floor heat mat, radiant floor heating supply, radiant floor mat, tile heating, heated floors
SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating is an underfloor heating system that aids in keeping the indoors as well as outdoors warm. A type of electric radiant floor heating, this low temperature heating system emits radiant heat from under the floor surface that heats the air; subsequently making the house warm. The twin, multi-stranded and oxygen-free copper heating elements form the heart of this system, augmenting its utilization and longevity. Furthermore, the strong synthetic Aramid fibers reinforce these heating wires and add to their longitudinal strength.
The dual-wire technology of SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating allows user to initialize the mat at the thermostat and end at any of the desired locations. Another benefit of this heating system is that the mat can be flipped and turned at 90° and 180°, so as to fill in virtually any shape. The wire can thus be easily released and fitted into angles or curves, leaving no gap. Moreover, the open weave design of the wire mesh facilitates strong bonding of the thinset to the surfaces, both above and below the heating mat. Typically, wire spacing is determined not to exceed 90° C for ideal floor warming application.
For maximum safety, the heating elements are woven to the underside of the mat, and are ringed by a fully shielded grounding jacket. This set up further extends the power lead to the grounding wire in the junction box for the thermostat. Besides the benefits provided by intrinsic features of the SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating, the system has also won accolades for its aestheticism. Unlike heat pumps and vents, this system is laid beneath the floor surface and is thus, completely invisible. Moreover, efficient installation of the floor heating system also avoids the risk of direct contact with the heating element.
electric floor heating, radiant heat flooring, radiant floor heating, under floor heating, electrical floor heating, floor heating, SunTouch, warm your floors, sun touch heating system, Heated floor mat, heat mat, radiant floor heat mat, radiant floor heating supply, radiant floor mat, tile heating, heated floors
This system further delivers an even radiant heat across the whole floor surface; whilst, heating the home from the floor up. All one has to do is program the thermostat as per the lifestyle, and the rest is assured by the system itself. Optimization of energy costs due to rapid distribution of heat, easy regulation of temperature, and precise control of heating are other advantages of the system. Moreover, the uniform heat spread does not create heat droughts that lift up dust and allergens. Thus, the SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating enables user to achieve a uniformly heated home in a healthy way.
Owing to all these advantages, the SunTouch Radiant Floor Heating has rapidly replaced conventional heating systems like boilers and heat pumps, which are inefficient as well as expensive.

Dont Fall Victim to the DIY Hype

Contractor Directory, Remodeling Contractor, contractor, subcontractors, contractors directory, construction directory
DIY home improvements are all the rage and many homeowners are choosing these instead of hiring professionals. Though it is an easy way to save a few bucks, one must ensure that the DIY task undertaken by you is successfully completed. A properly executed home improvement task will not only enhance the aesthetics of your house but will also add to its value.
You must realize that a DIY home improvement demands patience, perseverance, skill and tool. Hence, if you think that you have all of these you can surely complete any DIY task; but if you have even a slightest doubt about your capabilities, do not start the task. The most important thing that you need to have is time; because if you do not have adequate time to finish it then your house will be in a mess till the time you finish it.
The next thing that needs to be ensured is that you must know how to do the task, along with having all the necessary tools. With the increasing popularity of these tasks, more and more manufacturers are producing and marketing products for the DIYers. To get information about the task, you can take help of a friend who has done similar task as he will be able to guide you better as to what needs to be done. It is advisable to gather all the information about the project and then decide whether or not you have the abilities to complete the task. Moreover, something that may be cake walk for your friend may not easy for you; hence whatever you decide make sure you do not have to face incredibly difficult time while doing the task.
There are certain tasks that may sound simple but in reality they are not. For example, painting a room is a simple task but painting the whole house on your own is not because it demands significant amount of time, stamina and skill. You need to judge whether a task is actually a DIY task or not; fence building may sound easy but in reality it may not be that easy. In contrast, painting a fence is an easy task and can be successfully done by almost everyone. However, task like deck building and dry walling are daunting and should be left for professionals because even after putting in all the efforts you may not be able to replicate what a pro can do.
Since you can judge yourself best, you will be able to make a wise decision whether or not you can complete the task and that too with perfection. In case you feel that certain home improvement task is not your cup of tea, you must avoid doing it. Moreover, doing a task that gives an impression that an amateur did it, takes away the value and appeal of your home. To avoid this, you must hire a pro who is skilled, experienced and have completed similar task with perfection.
Hence, do not fall victim to the DIY hype and do a DIY home improvement task only because your friend or neighbor did the same. Keep every aspect in perspective and then make a final decision whether or not you should do a particular DIY task.

Determining type of drainage
One of the most important decisions to consider with a tiled shower area is how to design the drainage.
Not only aesthetically, but also technically – the solution must fit the bathroom floor layout and grades to ensure it functions properly.
Tradition shower drain
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
Offers a point outlet, typically located at the center of the shower area. Requires careful 4-way grading of the floor to ensure water flows to the outlet without pounding.
  • Usually a cheaper initial product cost
  • Usually a cheaper initial product cost threshold applications
  • Requires traditional tiled threshold step to contain water
  • Tiling can be difficult and complex -particularly if using large dimension tiles
  • Increased flooring cost due to extra time required to produce a 3D floor pan. Increased tile wastage due to significant increase in cuts required.
Linear shower channel
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
Offers a linear grate and body that can be located anywhere within the shower area. Requires simple 2D grading of the floor towards the channel.
  • Usually a higher initial product cost
  • Can be used with any type of tiled shower configuration
  • Can be used to create wet or dry areas
  • Level threshold can be created for easy wheelchair / disabled (ADA) access
  • Tiling is simplified with minimal cuts required
  • Easy to use with any tile size and material
  • Reduced tiling cost due to decreased time required. Decreased tile wastage due to significantly fewer cuts required.
Quartz by ACO quality
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
The shower channel components are all grade 304 stainless steel. Bodies are fully welded and leak tested prior to dispatch.
Multiple grating designs
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
The range of grating designs complements personal design preferences and can enhance the appearance of the room. Grates are also easily replaced for a new look.
Material finish
Electro-polished
Channels and gratings are electro polished. This process creates a shiny defect-free surface which minimizes cleaning and maintenance for a high class finish. The textured appearance of the grate is still visible after electro-polishing and helps reduce the appearance of finger prints and soap residue.
Oil-rubbed bronze
In order to complement the latest trend in bathroom fixtures, the channel and grate are also available in oil-rubbed bronze. This finish is applied over the same stainless steel base to ensure a long lasting quality product.
Technical and planning considerations
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
Installation against the wall.
Outlet flow rate up to 9.5 GPM (0.6 l/s) based on floor grades such that 0.2” (5 mm) head of water possible (see diagram to right).
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
Installation at the entrance
Outlet flow rate up to 6.3 GPM (0.4 l/s) based on no water accumulation (head of water).
Accumulation and slopes
ASME A112.6.3-2001 requires a 2“ outlet for shower applications. QuARTz by ACO channels have this as standard. The flow value for a 2″ outlet varies depending upon the head of water above the grating.
In the case of shower channels, a head of water is not typical in practice, due to shallower floor grades. Floor drains can have a head of water due to ‘basin’ profile of floor grades.
Flow values without any accumulation (head of water) should be used when shower channels are placed around the perimeter of the shower and no shower threshold step is used.
If the shower channel is installed against a wall, there may be a small amount of accumulation (head of water) depending on the layout of the shower area. Grade of shower floor will determine depth of buildup. (See below).
Quartz by aco, Shower Channels, Linear Drain, linear shower channel, shower channel drain, Quick Drain, square drain, rectangle drains, floor grilles, shower grates, Quick Drain
Outflow performance
The choice of shower channel generally depends on the flow values of the shower fitting. 70 % of shower heads have a maximum capacity of less than 5 GPM (0.3 l/s.)
The QuARTz by ACO shower drain standard channel has an outflow of 6.3 GPM (0.4 l/s). This value assumes no head of water above drain.
Based upon these flow rates the QuARTz by ACO shower drain standard channel can be used in conjunction with the majority of shower head fittings.
A number of custom solutions are available to cope with shower heads with higher flow rates (see page 14).

Noise transfer
Plumbing fixtures are commonly the cause of unwanted noise in large commercial buildings; hotels, hospitals, apartment complexes etc. Acceptable acoustical levels are typically assessed in terms of their relationship with a background sound level. Acoustical rating tests for fixtures is still relatively new and are not yet defined in a US standard; ASTM has established a project E-33.08B, Plumbing Noise to investigate the problem. Other international standards include ISO 3822-3 “Acoustics – Laboratory tests on noise emission from appliances and equipment used in water supply installations“ and DIN 4109 “Sound insulation in buildings; requirements and testing”.
QuARTz by ACO showers channels have been tested in accordance with DIN 4109 to determine its enhanced noise transfer levels. The impact sound noise level (water hitting the floor plate) was measured at 27 dB – DIN 4109 specifies 30 dB as acceptable. A shower typically creates 60 to 90 dB when measured at a distance of 3 feet and background noise in a urban bedroom at night is typically around 30 dB, therefore QuARTz by ACO shower channels should not cause any noise transfer concerns.

Plumbing fittings
In order to connect the 2” plain end spigot to the plumbing system a connection fitting with be required. QuARTz by ACO offer a choice of two:
  • CPE membrane fitting – typically used with the plain body channel. Allows connection and clamping of a CPE flexible membrane
  • Stainless steel clad flexible coupling – typically used with the flanged body channel. Used where a hot-mop painted membrane is used. Stainless steel cladding ensures connector is suitable where plastic fitting are considered a fire hazard.
